I was born in August the 14th, and I was the first child. I was named
after mother’s brother who died soon after
WW2, and who she loved so much. She
often tells me I remind her of him, and often I
thought that I was he!! Our family would
grow, and we are 4 siblings within 10 years:
Me, Solveig (nurse), Lilla (nurse) and Toril
(dentist’s assistant.) So being the oldest
and only brother gave me advantages, I
think.
Our family was never rich, but we had a small cottage, had a small
car and traveled as far as Italy sometimes. We were active in a
Pentecostal church, which my grandfather had founded, and we
were brought up very strict, but with much love and care. We are
very close even today. I can tell that all
we four siblings walked together in
France for one month in May 2002.
Of course there were heated
discussions, but it turned out to be so
good to be together for so long. And
we renewed our commitment to each
other, like.
My childhood was bright.I was always a little shy, but I
was a quick learner, and I cannot remember I spent
much time doing homework! I remember someone called
me Jesus, because I attended to our church's meetings.
But mother said that was indeed an honor. I early saw
myself as a sinner and in need of salvation. At 13 I was
baptized. We were 20-30 young people in our church
and I
remember the time as very good. But I
longed to grow up and be independent.
I attended civil service instead of going to army. This was 1968 and
it was allowed to refuse to go to the army. In stead I planted trees
for a half year, and after that worked as a photographer in a
museum. I dated the first girls at 15 - that was as you could think,
a timid business, and many confused feelings.
In -68 I also got the first steady commitment. We were sure that
we would marry......
After that I also started to attend to another similar church, because
our family moved. I never saw my old church again. I had put on a beard, and that
was not accepted, and I was hurt and left. But the new church did not have such
rules, and I was active singing, witnessing - participating in the life in church.
I have always had good friends, and some still are to this day. Even if we seldom
meet, the close connection is there; as if we saw each other yesterday.....
I had different girl friends, but nothing lasted. I waited. I also
discovered the Nurses' school and there was a revival there. And
surely we were there too. And it did not take long time before I also
wanted to be a nurse. I had never been inside a hospital!! And there
I wanted to be a nurse. I filled in the applications and Aug. -70 I
started. 25 students - 5 of them men - boys really.
And a new chapter began. That year I was in Israel
for the first time. That was a premier experience. To
be where our Lord had walked. To see the historical places, and to
behold the miracle of the people of the Scripture return to their Land.
It was awesome and moving. I had a great spiritual encounter there
too. And it gave me something to hold on to.
I have always lived the nature, and used it often.I liked also to read, and I took the
bus every Thursday to the Town Library in Arendal to pick up my weekly supply of
reading stuff. And I read all. I even read the Bible several times, and still remember
almost all - not by heart, of course.
